Allen R. Huang

Biography

Allen Huang, MDCM, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. He is the past Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Huang is a certified specialist in Geriatric Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Physicians and the American Geriatrics Society. He has been the service chief of the Royal Victoria Hospital 8-Medical acute inpatient geriatric service, and program director for the McGill Postgraduate residency training program in Geriatric Medicine. Aside from an active clinical geriatrics, teaching and administrative portfolio, Dr. Huang has deep interests in clinical informatics. He is a co-investigator in several research projects with Dr. Robyn Tamblyn (University of McGill, MUHC). One of the showcase projects is MOXXI (Medical Office of the XXIst century - http://moxxi.mcgill.ca), which continues to explore the use of an electronic prescribing solution to improve the health of patients. Dr. Huang is a founding member of the McGill Clinical Health and Informatics Research Group (http://www.mcgill.ca/mchi). His research interests and expertise are in the areas of medication management in the elderly and patient safety. Dr. Huang was a member of the MUHC Clinical Information System champions’ group, which is responsible enterprise-wide for the deployment, upgrade and maintenance of the OACIS electronic health record from Telus Health Solutions. Dr. Huang’s vision includes the ongoing use of data generated by clinical information systems during health care delivery activities, and the creation of new scientific knowledge that can be introduced back into those care activities to enable continuing quality improvement. Dr. Huang is working to extend these activities to his new environment in Ottawa.
